Emissive (Evan Jamal Vincent) is an electronic music DJ & producer from Toronto, Canada. A musical upbringing and a handful of trips to Detroit and London at a formative age helped plant the seeds of the Emissive concept. (Emissivity = a principle in physics defined as the measure of infrared energy radiated from an object.) Drawing influence from the explosion of forward-thinking 90s electronic music innovation and shining it through the mutated prism of contemporary sound design approaches, Vincent’s music is familiar yet otherworldly, conjuring an imagined nostalgia that serves as a blueprint for how to move forward. Using varied rhythms and velocities as a canvas upon which to lay a raw, enveloping, harmonic tapestry results in songs that are as propulsive as they are grounding.

He has just launched a label called earthNetwork, which is a home for various new collaborative efforts taking on new aliases and personas. The label's first release: ENRG001 released June 6th and is available digitally via bandcamp.

Vincent’s most recent solo release comes in the form of a 4 track EP called Unseen Measures on NYC label Aronia Records. The release has been met with enthusiastic support from artists/DJs such as Entro Senestre, NIKS, Yumi, deep creep, m50, Tony Price, Honeydrip and Francis Harris. The release has also had favourable write-ups in Resident Advisor and DJ Mag. Vincent has recently debuted a new live set for MUTEK Montreal 2023 and released a follow up album to 2020’s Active Surplus (a joint venture with long-time collaborator Ian Syrett) summer 2023.

In addition to this, he has recently completed an original score for an independent short documentary from director Lucy Cameron.

Toronto based Emissive brings his inimitable sound to Aronia Records with a new four track EP. Unseen Measures is a collection of music distinct in tempo and timbre but unified by an emotive quality that is characteristic of Emissive’s productions. Oxygen Contact sets the pace with undulating synth swirls and metallic clangs backed by a steady rhythmic pulse. Grannr carries the vibe with a distorted and compressed drum pattern, flowering into a cathartic chord progression. The mood swells with Uplink’s shimmering synths and twinkling melodies bursting with peak time energy. This euphoria tapers off to a sensual comedown in the form of an eleven minute meditation on the dance floor, closing off the record with a Resounding Yes of hypnotic loops and rhythms.

Fresh and direct from Toronto, Pacific Rhythm is pleased to welcome Emissive (aka Evan Vincent) for a solo cruise on the label. While Vincent has appeared on the label twice as part of house music duo Active Surplus (alongside Ian Syrett), this new EP entitled Wave Science sees the young musician push his sound into warmer and more melodic waters. Vincent says the new tracks pay tribute to the Black American roots of electronic music; a historical fact the producer says is an ongoing source of motivation and inspiration in his work.

Indeed, this new four-tracker sees Emissive bring in a pinch of futuristic boogie and cosmic funk to his dancefloor recipe—versatile flavours that should go down quite well at a variety of Dance Opportunities in the very near future! All of the tunes were composed and mixed at Vincent’s home studio in Canada’s largest city, with the tracks getting a warm, Hi-Fi mixdown via Syrett’s Nagra IV reel-to-reel. Tech talk aside, Vincent says he wanted to avoid over-analyzing the production and instead summon the spirits of dance, love and seasonal warmth. Or as the artist himself says: “Less thinking, more feeling.” Check it out and we’re sure you’ll agree his approach paid off!
